As innovation accelerates across laboratory diagnostics, clinical testing, and data science, ADLM supports the laboratory medicine community through education, advocacy, and collaboration that empower professionals to navigate change and advance the field. To build on this momentum and lead ADLM into its next phase of growth, we are seeking a Chief Executive Officer with a proven record of success in business model innovation, revenue growth, and change management. As CEO, you will ensure the association’s long-term financial sustainability and increase our relevance, reach, and impact in the US and internationally. ALDM is a financially strong organization with an operating budget of $25M and investments of $26M. In this role, you’ll lead a five-person executive team and approximately 60 staff across human resources, finance, technology, meetings and events, science and policy, education, and membership, marketing, communications, and business development. Reporting to and working closely with ADLM’s highly engaged Board of Directors, you will leverage our recent rebranding and new strategic plan to reimagine and strengthen value for members and laboratory medicine professionals worldwide.
ADLM serves more than 5,000 members and influences tens of thousands more in the broader scientific and medical communities through our portfolio of high-impact events, programs, and services. We publish the leading international journal of laboratory medicine with an impact factor of 6.3, provide ongoing education and certification to help clinical lab professionals further their careers, and host the world’s leading laboratory medicine conference and trade show, attracting close to 20,000 attendees annually.

Advocacy and Awareness
- Serve as an effective spokesperson for ADLM’s advocacy priorities on Capitol Hill, with global partners, and among peer organizations, articulating each issue’s importance to the field and in advancing patient health.
- Position ADLM as a leading voice on key issues such as laboratory developed test regulation, pediatric reference intervals, Medicare reimbursements, and protecting patient access to quality tests.
- Provide strategic direction for expanding partnerships with aligned organizations and increasing the impact of advocacy communications, scientific activities, and clinical policy.
- Ensure ADLM is a key contributor to clinical laboratory practice through its publication of guidance and policies, participation in research, and sharing of expertise.
Board Governance
- Monitor the evolving diagnostics and laboratory medicine field, including regulatory changes and technological advancements, to surface potential challenges and opportunities. Provide data-driven recommendations to help the Board focus on decisions that matter most.
- Leverage the Board’s scientific expertise in the field, adding insights from market research and external relationships to guide ADLM’s strategic direction. Offer candid, constructive input to the Board to support decision-making.
- Ensure transparency with clear communication of Board directives to staff and regular progress updates to the Board.
Business Model Innovation
- Oversee the annual budget, manage and optimize existing revenue streams, and work with the Senior Management Team to identify, evaluate, and launch revenue-generating initiatives that reduce dependence on the Annual Meeting. This includes advancing early-stage initiatives such as the Content Strategy and Business Growth projects.
- Use data to support strategic decisions, such as sunsetting programs that no longer generate revenue or provide member value.
- Ensure all active and new initiatives are based on solid business principles, developed with a clear business case, informed by market research, and supported by realistic financial projections.
Meetings, Events, and Education
- Work closely with the Senior Management Team to oversee the planning and execution of ADLM’s Annual Meeting and Clinical Lab Expo, conferences, and symposiums.
- Explore opportunities to evolve and expand ADLM’s event portfolio to align with shifting audience expectations, emerging scientific and industry trends, and increasing global collaboration.
- Ensure the Annual Meeting remains the premier event in the field while also maintaining its role as a key revenue driver.
- Explore new opportunities for member and customer education and digital content.
Membership Value and Expansion
- Enhance member value through a data-driven, segmented approach that serves ADLM’s core base of PhDs and MDs while expanding appeal to a broader range of laboratory medicine and industry professionals at all career stages, both domestically and internationally (e.g., clinical laboratory scientists, microbiologists, molecular diagnostics professionals, manufacturers, and other commercial stakeholders).
- Build on the momentum of the 2023 rebrand with a comprehensive, cross-platform communications and marketing strategy that strengthens ADLM’s value proposition, amplifies its influence in the field, attracts new audiences, and supports credibility globally. Ensure scientific content is relevant to and easily accessible by target member and customer segments.
- Develop a strategic and data-informed framework to expand ADLM’s reach in key international regions (e.g., Latin America, the Asia-Pacific, and the Middle East) through innovative membership models and broader engagement strategies driven by programs, content, and mutually beneficial partnerships.
Staff Leadership and Operations
- Provide hands-on executive leadership to guide staff through change and foster a culture of high performance, accountability, and innovation, while mentoring and promoting development opportunities for all staff.
- Explore ways to improve internal efficiency, add capacity, and ensure operational sustainability through technology, including data analytics and AI. Oversee the successful adoption of new systems and workflows, including the rollout of the new association management system (AMS).
- Evaluate the structure of the Senior Management Team and invest in leadership development to strengthen team dynamics and leadership effectiveness. Set clear priorities and create systems to keep strategic work on track.
Strategic Plan Implementation
- Partner with the Board to execute the goals, tactics, and metrics in the 2024-2029 strategic plan and key performance indicators.
- Oversee and collaborate with the Senior Management Team to advance strategic priorities, including establishing ADLM as the home for data science in laboratory medicine and developing a global strategy that integrates across all areas of influence and service delivery.
- Ensure initiatives are well-coordinated, aligned with ADLM’s mission and positioning in the field, and produce measurable outcomes within defined timelines.
Work Environment, Salary, and Benefits
- ADLM currently operates on a hybrid schedule at our office in Washington, DC. Some travel is required to attend board meetings, conferences, partner events, etc.
- The budgeted total cash compensation range for this position is $475K – $525K. We offer an exceptional benefits program, including 21 days of PTO plus two personal days, 13 paid holidays, paid family, bereavement, volunteer, and pet leave, medical/dental/vision plans, up to a 10% match retirement contribution, and more. We also offer an on-site fitness center and convenient access to Metro.
Qualifications
- 15+ years of progressive leadership experience in scientific, medical, or healthcare-related professional societies of $10M in revenue or more, with at least 5 years in a C-suite, VP, or senior management role.
- Experience working with boards of directors to shape strategic direction and provide transparent governance support.
- Expertise in business model innovation and revenue diversification, including developing new initiatives grounded in market research, financial analysis, and member-driven insights.
- Direct experience in building and managing international partnerships, collaborations, or initiatives that expand an organization’s reach and impact.
- Proven ability to lead and develop high-performing teams through multiple layers of management.
