Job Search
Advice Worth Listening To...
Let's face it,
when you are a job seeker, you get a lot of well meaning, but terrible
advice - mostly from the people who love you most - your friends and
family.
They mean well, but often lack an understanding of the harsh reality of
job search in this market. I, on the other hand, am pretty jaded and
fairly realistic about what it takes to succeed. I often cringe when I
hear the bad and outdated advice some people are giving.
That's why we started a new blog exclusively
for job seekers - The
Search Firm Insider. As search firm insiders, we know how the hiring
process works, and more importantly, how it does NOT work. So every day
we plan to share at least one worthwhile idea that we hope will be useful
to job seekers. So add us to your Google
Reader. And if you don't use Google Reader, get
it, and then add us!
Here
are a few topics we're talking about right now:
Does your resume send the right message in 10 seconds? Technology
has made it simple for recruiters to find an overwhelming flow of
candidates through online advertising. So in order to get through
hundreds of resumes, they will often spend only 10 seconds scanning each
one.
Who's getting hired right now? Even in this job market, there are
jobs to be filled. But many of these won't be read about on CareerBuilder, or one of the typical job boards. How
do you find them?
7 Tips to Write an Amazing Cover Letter.
If you
prefer Facebook instead of reading blogs, we've got you covered. Our company page on Facebook, is a
one-stop-shop for both our job-seeker blog and
our job postings.
And
don't forget to follow me on Twitter.
If you have never used it, it is not nearly as dumb as you think. I find
some of my best articles, perspective and news there, long before I see
it elsewhere. I promise not to send you notes about the lines at
Starbucks, or other inane banter. Check it out and decide for yourself.

Welcome,
Starting
this week, every HR and Recruiting job I hear about will be first posted
on our new company Facebook page.
Yes, I promise we will keep sending out emails, but we frequently hear
about new jobs within days of sending our newsletter, and it did not seem
right to keep you waiting. So we'll post them on Facebook
as soon as they come in, and then email them out out
on our normal schedule. If you're impatient like me, go to Facebook. If not, just wait for the emails. We also
plan to include a few job hunting tips with each email as well.
Job seekers: here is your first tip:
Facebook. LinkedIn. Twitter.
Plaxo.
Are you on there yet? If you are job seeking, you need to be. And if
we've met, let's be sure to connect - just to expand your network a bit.
(As a rule of thumb, I connect with total strangers on Twitter, use Plaxo if we've connected on email, LinkedIn if we've met in person, and my personal Facebook account if we really know each other well.
But our company Facebook page is open to
anyone.)

Ben Gotkin presents "Using
Social Media to Increase the Visibility of Yourself and Your
Organization"
In an
economy as challenging as today, two things are important to
understand: First, being highly visible in your profession is critical
to enhancing your career marketability. Second, everyone is using
social media today for a variety of reasons, job hunting being one of
them. Quite simply, it's more important now than ever for you and your
organization to be found and accessible. We will explore using real-life
examples how people and organizations are adopting social media to help
with their career growth and attract talent.
Ben is the National Recruiting Director for RSM McGladrey.
In this role, Ben develops and delivers programs and strategies designed
to enhance the firm's overall recruiting efforts. He led initiatives to
re-launch the employee referral program, develop and launch an alumni
program, establish new hire and candidate surveys, change national job
board providers, train recruiters on writing effective job descriptions
and establish a social media recruitment marketing plan.
